Those who were not bathing could sit in the XX adjoining alcoves - gossiping, reading or eating. The Great Bath lay hidden for centuries and was only rediscovered in the 1860s. In 1880 the full complex was excavated. The remains, sculptures, mosaics and other artefacts are on display in the underground museum. When the Romans withdrew from Britain, the baths fell into dereliction, although some visitors still came to drink and bathe.
